How do anti-aging skincare products work?
Skincare products work because of a specific active ingredient or ingredients that the product is packed with which helps boost collagen production. As we age, we gradually stop producing collagen: the protein which keeps skin firm, smooth and youthful in appearance. Anti-aging skincare products therefore incorporate ingredients which help to produce more collagen in the body in order to make skin look younger. Some of the most popular ingredients of anti-aging skincare products are retinol, antioxidants and peptides.
Anti-Aging Ingredient #1: Retinol
The most tried-and-true anti-aging moisturizer ingredient is retinol, an active form of vitamin A. Our bodies naturally lose vitamin A overtime which lead to signs of aging such as wrinkles, fine lines and discoloration. Retinol works by replenishing the body of vitamin A which increases cell turnover and stimulates the production of new blood vessels in the skin. This helps the body to build collagen, repair sun-damaged skin, improve complexion and treat wrinkles. However, as with most anti-aging skincare products, changes are not immediate. It may take around three to six months of regular use before you start noticing improvements.
Anti-Aging Ingredient #2: Antioxidants
Antioxidants are primarily a preventative ingredient which protects the skin from sun damage and free radicals (unstable molecules which causes damage to cells found in pollution and UV rays) that threatens collagen production. Antioxidants can come in a variety of forms, including green tea, vitamin E and C. Their anti-inflammatory properties allows for the skin to repair and correct visible damage, with some antioxidants (like vitamin C) helping to encourage collagen production.
Anti-Aging Ingredient #3: Peptides
Peptides are amino acids that make up certain proteins that help to heal skin cells and stimulate new cell growth. Certain peptides are used to heal wounds by increasing the production of collagen. This collagen producing feature has given the ingredient increasing prevalence in the cosmetic industry.
